The currency of Dubai is the Emirati Dirham, with one Dirham equalling 100 fils. Notes come in denominations of Dh1000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of Dh1, and 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 fils. The currency is tied to the US Dollar. Money is easy to exchange in most hotels. General customs and politeness are to be observed in Dubai, and Muslim customs should be respected – though it is legal to drink alcohol in Dubai. Formal wear is expected of business encounters. The religious festival of Ramadan means no eating, drinking or smoking in public, and should be adhered to, to avoid any offence. Tipping is usually avoided, as hefty service charges are automatically applied to bills.
